ASHLEIGH BARTY: ROLAND-GARROS CHAMPION

Ashleigh Barty is now a Grand Slam singles champion.

The Australian defeated Marketa Vondrousova 6-1, 6-3 to win the 2019 women’s title at Roland-Garros on Saturday afternoon.

Barty, 23, was in control throughout against the Czech teenager, surging to a 4-0 lead on Court Philippe-Chatrier before Vondrousova got onto the board.

Playing with creativity and controlled aggression, she fired a forehand winner up the line to take the opening set. While the second set was closer, an early break gave Barty the upper hand – and she never relinquished her advantage.

With her victory, Barty is projected to rise to world No.2 when the new WTA rankings are released on Monday.

Barty is the first Australian player, male or female, to win the singles title at Roland-Garros since Margaret Court in 1973.
