Johanna Konta overcomes second-set meltdown to advance to French Open third round

Johanna Konta made life difficult for herself, but in the end she had too much for Lauren Davis and booked her place in the third round of the French Open for the first time.

After struggling during the first few months of the season, Konta found some form on clay as she finished runner-up in Rabat and in Rome.

And she has carried that form over to Roland Garros, first beating Antonia Lottner in straight sets in the first round and then followed it up with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 win over wildcard Davis on Wednesday.

With a break in game eight of the opening set, the British No 1 was in control, but then made a nightmare start to the second set as American Davis broke twice to take a 5-0 lead before serving things out.

Konta then turned the tables as she built a 5-0 lead in the decider before Davis won the next three games as she saved three match points. However, she wasn’t to be denied as she won on her fourth match point.

Next up is Viktoria Kuzmova, who advanced when fourth seed Kiki Bertens withdrew due to illness.
